Comprehension Questions for Section 4.
Independent Reading Assignment Character
Alphabet or Character Trait Poster due Monday,
June 3rd. See sample character traits at:
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson175/traits.pdf
See directions below:
Option A:
A Character’s Alphabet Book
Using one (or both) characters, create twenty-six sentences based on the
alphabet scheme that demonstrates your knowledge of the character.
You must include specific details from your independent reading book.
Bonus Points: Use construction paper (cut each piece of construction paper
into 4 or 6 smaller pieces; you will need 5 to 7 pieces of paper), and do 1 letter
on each smaller piece; then, staple together into a small book.
Example:
If after reading The Breadwinner, you decided to write Parvana’s alphabet, it could start like this:
A is for how AFRAID Parvana felt when she was disguised as “Kaseem” and was approached by a Talib soldier. She was certain he was reaching for a gun, but actually produced a letter for her to read.
B is for the BOLDNESS Parvana demonstrates when she yells at the Talib in the marketplace to stop hitting her for shopping without a burqa or male relative.
C is for the COURAGE Parvana shows when she leads Homa, who does not have a burqa, through the streets of Kabul after curfew.
When you get to the letters like x, v and z, include words that contain the letters; they don’t necessarily have to start with them: eXact, Very______, Zealous about…
The Character Alphabet should be neat, colorful, and show effective effort.
Option B: Character Trait Poster
Choose one character and four character traits exhibited by the character. Make a poster, with four squares. Title each square with the character trait, and create a colored illustration in each square of a scene from your novel where the character exhibits that trait. Illustrations must be detailed, colored, and show effective effort. Finally, caption each illustration with a paragraph (5 to 7 sentences each), explaining the trait and the scene depicted.
